个人觉得die这个动词是瞬间动词（总不能死这个动作要死很久吧.）

而你想表达的“他已经S了”就是状态。
我们通常表达“他死了”，译作“He is dead.”你的句子只是把时间点往后延了两个，是过去完成时表状态。
而“He died”这样的句型通常不会单独出现。它可以是“He blinked his eyes in despair,and then he died.”他绝望地眨了眨眼，就死了。（只能用作死亡的这个瞬间。）或者是"He died of hunger."他死于饥饿。（和别的介搭配表具体的死亡的原因地点等等）
