Not just test-takers
Getting into a good university has always been a challenge.Teenagers are relieved if the college entrance exams; but sadly, good scores do not guarantee a place at a leading university.
In the UK this year,a record-breaking number of students received top A grades in their A-level exams. But as the UK’s Daily Telegraph reports, there are 60,000 more applicants for university places in the country in 2009 than this time last year, thanks to more people in the age group and the effects of the age group and the effects of the recession.Although British universities are offering an extra 10,000 places, inevitably there will be students who lose out
For instance,Oxford and Cambridge have seen record applications for the next academic year – around 15,000people with top grades applied for the 3,000 or so places on offer at each institution
“We are turning away candidates with not just three As but four As,” said Wendy Piatt,Director General of the Russell Group of research intensive universities, speaking with BBC Radio.
She added that British universities tried to look at the whole candidate, not just grades.
In the United States,an excellent SAT score doesn’t secure a teenager a place in the Ivy League, either.Universities judge would-be students on their test scores as well as their abilities and academic promise.
“Our universities do not have a cutoff score for getting in.They are looking at what you learn from being the vice-president of your student union, what you learn from painting, playing basketball, etc.,and all these can distinguish you from the other applicants and show how unique you are,” said Joyce Slayton Mitchell, who has worked as a college advisor for over 20 years.
In recent years,Chinese universities have also begun to take students’ all-around abilities into account. Some universities have introduced an overall assessment system and autonomous recruitment programs. These are supposed to help select candidates who have a strong ability or a range of talents.
“Creative people are in a better position to succeed in both university and society than those who are just good test-takers,” said Tang Lining,18,from Linyi,Shandong province, who hopes that more universities will focus on a student’s overall record and not simply grades.
