Form and Substance
Form and substance have been two important concepts in axiological criticism of visual art and design. What interactions or synergy is there between the expression of outer visual form and the conveying of inner meaning? Shall such interactions come from the visual artist or designer’s personal notion of art, or shall it be based on the fundamental purpose of visual art and design?
Obviously, form is a primary element and critical aspect of design. Designing is deemed as a visual art owing to its constant pursuit of the form. The Dutch school of modernist design is originated from a group of artists known for their pioneering study of forms. They explored basic geometric shapes, primary colours and tried to express the substance of modernity and their new way of thinking towards art by the simplest form language of lines and colour lumps. However, this by no means suggests that form is the utmost value of design arts. On the contrary, modernist design arts have swept classicism and Gothic style or any other force that stands in the way of industrialization and resists machines or any kind of social progress under the banner of “form serves substance”.
Meanwhile, form and substance have been in a troubled marriage with each other. Being indispensable parts of visual art and design, they have inspired generations of design artists to revisit, renew and deepen their understanding of the complex interactions between the two. The design art works collected in this book provide examples of the use of lines and colours, media and texture. The designers tried novel forms to express their values and ideas, traditional and avant-garde. They may not have made particular efforts to elucidate the relationship between form and substance, but these works are definitely telling us how form and substance can be fused into the distinct style of each individual artwork.
Confucius said: “When substance overshadows form, it is churlish. When form overshadows substance, it is pedantry. Gentlemanliness can only be seen in a well-balanced mixture of both.” This may provide some insights into the fundamental values and proper ethics of visual arts and design.
