子路见孔子,子曰：“汝何好乐?”对曰：“好长剑．”孔子曰：“吾非此之问也,徒谓以子之所能,而加之以学问,岂可及乎．”子路曰：“学岂益哉也?”孔子曰：“夫人君而无谏臣则失正,士而无教友则失听．御狂马不释策, 御狂马者不得释棰策也操弓不反檠． 弓不反于檠然后可持也木受绳则直,人受谏则圣,受学重问,孰不顺哉．毁仁恶仕,必近于刑． 谤毁仁者憎怒士人必主于刑也君子不可不学．”子路曰：“南山有竹,不柔自直,斩而用之,达于犀革．以此言之,何学之有?”孔子曰：“括而羽之,镞而砺之,其入之不亦深乎．”子路再拜曰：“敬而受教．”

孔子对子路说：「你有什么喜好?」子路回答说：「我喜欢长剑.」孔子说：「我不是问这方面.以你的天赋,再加上学习,应该能有好的才能.」子路说：「学习能够增长我们的能力吗?」孔子说：「好比君王如果没有敢进谏的大臣,政事就会有错失；读书人如果没有能够指正自己缺点的朋友,品德就容易有缺失.对性情狂放的马不能放下鞭子,操弓射箭则不能随便更换辅正的檠.树木如果以墨绳来牵引就能长得笔直,人能接受善言规劝就能品格高尚.接受教导认真多问,没有什么学不成的.违背仁德专行恶事的人,随时要接受国法的制裁.所以说君子不能不学习.」子路说：「南山有一种竹子,不须揉烤加工就很笔直,削尖后射出去,能穿透犀牛的厚皮,所以有些东西天赋异秉又何必经过学习的过程呢?」孔子说：「如果在箭尾安上羽毛,箭头磨得锐利,箭不是能射得更深更远吗?」子路听后拜谢说：「真是受益良多.」
