钴是人体必需的微量元素.人体中钴的含量变化直接与人们的健康有关.大量研究工作表明,钴对铁的代谢,血红蛋白的合成,细胞的发育成熟及成熟细胞的释放等均有重要的生理功能.缺少钴元素将产生严重的低色素小细胞,而过量的钴却能产生严重的中毒现象.钴又是维生素B12的成分,具有高效能的生血作用.因此研究测定痕量钴的新方法在生命科学、药物和环境监测中有重要意义.
该方法系研究显色剂二甲酚橙（Xylenol orange）与Co2+在适宜的酸度条件下,发生显色反应,再加入表面活性剂溴化十六烷基三甲胺（CTMAB）与之前显色溶液形成三元络合物Co-XO-CTMAB.使显色体系的的最大吸收波长从582nm偏移至595nm处,再确定各个实验因素,成为测定水中微量钴含量的实验新方法.
