A tale of two cities is one of Dickens’ most important representive works. Charles Dickens is an outstanding English writer. He created some of literature's most iconic characters, with the theme of social reform running throughout his work. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. His writing style is florid and poetic, with a strong comic touch. Dickens's novels were, among other things, works of social commentary. He was a fierce critic of the poverty and social stratification of Victorian society. His literary style is also a mixture of fantasy and realism.
All the story in this book, which is fictional French Revolution, happened around the Manette family. Doctor Manettte had been in prison for 18 years just because he wanted to disclose Evermondes’ crimes. Marquis of Evermonde, a noble man in France, stole a countrywoman with his brother by force and killed her family. Doctor Manette came to know all their crimes by accident. In order to hide their crimes, they threw Manette into Bastille(a prison’s name in Paris).During these 18 years, Doctor Manette lost is freedom completely and suffered a lot in spirit. He was taken care of by Monsieur Defarge, his maid, before his daughter found her. Then she took him to London. It was Manette’s daughter who took good care of him and helped him return to normal. They came to know Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay, both of whom fell in love with Lucie latter, during a court. Sydney expressed his love to Miss Lucie, promising that he would do everything for her happiness. However, he didn’t mean to marry Lucie since he thought he was not a proper man for Lucie. Meanwhile, Lucie and Darnay fell in love with each other. Doctor Manette accepted his son-in-law although he knew that Darnay was the nephew of the an who threw him into prison. It was the love between father and daughter that made Doctor Manette conceal the truth for his daughter’s lifelong happiness. One day, Darnay had to return to Paris to rescue his uncle’s chamberlain who had been taking care of property for Darnay. Only God, if anyone, could see the upcoming tragedy. Before Darnay set off, Mr. Lorry went to Paris to deal with something for Tellson’s Bank at the age of 78 years old. Unfortuntely, Darnay was arrested and put into prison for he was Evemonde’s descendant. Lucie got the news and traveled to Paris with his father immediately. They turned to Lorry for help. At that time, perhaps Paris was the most chaotic city in the world. Citizen had taken over the city and the King’s head had been cut down. Luckily, Doctor Manette had been in Bastille for 1a long time, which would help him to out of his effect. Paris citizen respected Doctor Manette so much after they knew his bitter experience. At last, Darnay got out of prison. However, Darnay was taken away again the next morning. It was said that Madame Defarge charged Darnay of his noble family’s crimes. In fact, Madame Defarge was the sister of the woman sho was killed by Marquis of Evermonde. She had the obligation to take revenge on everyone from Evermonde family. It seemed that Darnay was due to die and no one could sane his young life. Lucie, as his wife, was in a deep sadness. Old Lorry also felt anxious. Then it was the time for Sydney Carton to do something. Carton looked like Darnay if you didn’t observe carefully. That was the method to rescue Darnay. Carton sacrificed his life for Lucie’s happiness. He fulfilled his promise. He got into the prison and Darnay was taken out of there instead. The Manette family managed to return to London. Carton, left in Paris, was killed to the face of thousands of people.
Upon reading the story, I feel unbelievable that hoe\w come the freedom people pursued must be base on so many innocent lives. Since freedom is a beautiful thing for ordinary people, why people all live in anxiety and dread after the revolution. And then what is the significance of revolution? In my opinion, some people are just using revolution as a tool to take revenges on others. They are the same cruel with noble man and make no distinctions between good and evil. A lot of evil were caused by freedom.
The beginning of the book is quite interesting. “It was best of times, it was the worst of times,it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Darkness, it was the season of Light, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. We had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going Heaven, we were all going direct the other way…” Dickens uses parallelism, exaggeration, contrast and humorous t begin the story, which makes the story must be a tragedy. However, there did exist brightness in this contradictory epoch.
Everemonde brothers are cruel and sinister. They killed people just as easy as they killed chickens. They deprived others freedom as long as they like and they thought it was their right to do so. They had never realized they had done something really wrong or something improper. There is an old saying: people who commit too many crimes will kill themselves. After all, there ia justice in the world. They will pay their lives for their crimes. “He lay there like a stone with a knife pushed into heart.” That’s the consequence of the Marquis. I think it was what he ought to gain.
Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution actually. He is a poor man who has been living in darkness for as long as 18 years, which made him become a shoemaker and lose his memory. Fortunately, he was released and found by his daughter. He love his daughter deeply. That’s why he allowed Lucie to marry Darnay although he remembered Darnay was from Evermonde family. After Darnay was arrested, he tried his best to persuade those furious citizen to release Darnay. He is the best father I have ever seen in the world.
Miss Pross, who always accompanied Lucie, is straightforward and loyal. She is wiling to risk her life defending Miss Lucie. Lorry is upright. He employed a woman to take of Lucie while he was arranging her father’s property. In Paris, as a 78 years old man, he not only dealt with business but also engaged himself in saving Darnay’s life. He is Manette’s true friend.
Lucie is beautiful and gentle. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone around her. When Carton expressed his love to her, she didn’t want to upset him and gave him much encouragement. She is a thoughtful and patient daughter. She lives with her father and recalls his memory slowly. She has a deep love for Darnay .she went to the same place where his husband could see her no matter what the weather is. She just stands ther quiet for 2 hours though she is afraid of the man who is cutting down trees.
Danary is a grateful and noble, better than any other noble man. Pursing his sacred aim an true love, he gave his property and the rank of nobility. Regardlesss of his own security, he returned to the chaotic city to recue the chamberlain’s life.
There is a disgusting character---Madame Defarge. All her life is a tragedy. Her miserable experience made her live under hatred. In her mind, the significance was to revenge for dead family. Her deep hatred made her become as cruel as the man who live in upper class before.
Sydney carton, a touching hero, is my favorite character. He has a same appearance with Darnay but completely different fate. His coming onto the stage is very special, referring to his note which expose the plot behind the case in the court. His tragedy lies in that he doesn’t believe in himself and feels himself inferior, which leads to he indulging himself. Then he feels desperate. He loved Lucie but he was afraid to disturb her life. What he said to Lucie is impressing. “I wish you to know that you have the last dream of my soul. In my degradation I have not been so degraded but that the sight of you with your father, and of this home made such a home by you, has stirred old shows that I thought had died out of me. Since I knew you, I have been troubled by a remorse that I thought would never reproach me again and have heard that from old voices impelling me upward, that stirring afresh, beginning anew, shaking off sloth and sensuality, and fighting out the abandoned fight. A dream, all a dream, that ends in nothing, and leaves the sleeper where he lay down, but I wish you to know that you inspired it.” The man, self-fiung away, wasted, drunken, poor creature of misuse as we know him to be, is actually a respectable one. He sacrifice his life to make Lucie get happiness. Once ha said: “I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me.” But in fact, he has someone to care for and there someone caring for him.
Dickens has distinct love and hate. He praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked.
Equality and fairness are what people seek, which led to the French revolution. As a result, neither equality nor fairness was got after the revolution. To the opposite, a lot of innocent people was killed during the revolution. They become the sacrifice of hollow freedom. The Manette family is just the typical one. And that’s the tragedy of history.
When I read the end part of the book, I burst into tears. “I see Barsad, and ,Cly,Defarge…. It is a far, far better thing that I do. than I have ever done; it is a far, far, better that I go to than I have ever known.”
The beginning of the book makes it interesting, and the end part makes it perfect.
