多数情态动词都有两种含义,一是它们共有的表示“可能性”,二是各自不同的含义,就这两个词而言,也是如此
一、would
1.可能性
It would seem to be getting warmer.天气似乎变得更暖和.
I would be about ten when my brother left home.我哥哥离开家时,我大概十岁左右 .
2.愿望、请求或建议 （虚拟）
I wish you would stay.我希望你能留下来
Would you go with me?你愿意和我一起去吗?
二、 用来表示过去的能力、可能性或允许：
1.可性能
It could be no better at that time.那时好得不能再好了.
If we could help,we would.如果我们能帮上忙,我们会帮的.
I could be wrong.我也许错了.
Could you come over here?你能到这边来吗?
2.能力
I could run faster then.那时我能跑得更快.
It was so dark that we could see nothing.天太暗了,我们什么也看不见.
3.在口语中取代may/might,表示允许,使得语气更加随和.
Only men could go to the club in those days.在当时,只有男人可以去俱乐部.
Could I borrow your thermos?我可以借用你的暖水瓶吗?
三、从句中的would和could也不会超出以上范围.
If you would do this for me,I should be grateful indeed.（若是你愿意我将感激——虚拟） .
I could do so if I would.（若使我愿意你就有可能——虚拟）
They would have been killed if the car had gone over the cliff.（如果汽车当时翻到悬崖下,他们就有可能丧命——虚拟）.
It was so dark that we could see nothing.（天黑,能力达不到）
If you tried,you could do the work better.（只要努力就有可能——虚拟）
If I could go with you,I should feel very glad.（只要你有可能,我就高兴）
